Xavier Naidoo to represent Germany in Stockholm

Song chosen in a live show by televoting on February 18th

Hamburg, Germany One of Germany's most successful artists has been internally chosen represent his country in the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest: Xavier Naidoo. Some of the most renowned songwriters and producers have been asked to prepare songs for him, the six best out of which will be presented in a national final on February 18th. The entry which Xavier Naidoo will sing on stage in Stockholm will be picked by the German TV viewers.

With 20 years of stage experience, all of his albums going gold or platinum, and several TV awards, Xavier Naidoo is undoubtedly on of the biggest stars of the German music scene. In 2016, he will add another items to his long list of achievements: He will represent Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest.

"Unser Song für Xavier" on February 18th
The song Xavier Naidoo will sing on stage in Stockholm has not been chosen yet - this important task remains for the German TV viewers. On February 18th, he will present six songs in a live show on the public TV channel Das Erste.

Three music experts, including Germany's latest Eurovision Song Contest winner Lena, will give their opinions on the songs during the show, but in the end, televoting will solely decide on the winning entry.

The best German composers and producers have been asked to submit their songs, with no restrictions on the language of the lyrics - they can be in German but also in English, for example. The six songs for the national final will be picked by a jury consisting of music experts on December 15th, with the involvement of Xavier Naidoo.

After December 16th, the songs will be presented to students of film and art academies in order to prepare staging concepts for the performances. These ideas, too, will be used in the live show.

About Xavier Naidoo
Xavier Naidoo has shaped German pop music for two decades. His albums sold millions in Germany, they topped the charts for weeks, and they all reached gold or platinum status. Their success extends to Austria and Switzerland. His song Dieser Weg was the official sound track for the German national team in the 2006 FIFA World Cup and thus was one of the most played songs of that year.

But Xavier Naidoo is not only a very successful musician - he also won several TV prizes. Currently he is touring Germany with his band Die Söhne Mannheims, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the group.

"Xavier Naidoo is an exceptional artist, who has been well-known in the German music business for more than 20 years. This is why we decided to directly select him. The fact that Xavier has agreed to represent Germany in Stockholm is, at the same time, an obligation for us to create the best possible conditions for his performance. For that reason we have changed the selection procedure this year: We ask Germany's best producers and composers to write for Xavier. And by cooperating with students of film and art academia, we want to encourage young and creative people to develop staging and performance concepts for the Eurovision Song Contest. The success of Lena, Loreen and Måns Zelmerlöw have shown that not only the personality of the singers and the power of the songs play a key role in the voting but also the staging of the acts. I am happy about Xavier's commitment and courage to take part in this and about his trust in us. I am looking forward to exciting months ahead of us", explains Thomas Schreiber, entertainment coordinator of the German public broadcaster ARD.

More than 130,000 young people from across NSW battled for the chance to put their spelling skills to the test since July; in the end, that number had become just 86, as finalists stepped up to the microphone in a non-stop spell-a-thon.

Words such as 'paprika' and 'dormouse' proved too tricky for the diminutive dictionary devourers, and soon there were only two left standing - Jessica Ashe from North Sydney Public School and Sri Vaishnavi Kolluri from Carlton South Public School. Sri Vaishnavi Kolluri who took the title with a loud and clear spelling of 'clairvoyant'.

Girl Scouts Honor Sruthi Tummala’s Service

Sruthi Tummala knows exactly when she fell in love with science and math — at her first Girl Scouts camp in eighth grade.

The Ursuline senior Sruthi Tummala was honored as a Young Woman of Distinction at the recent Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas Women of Distinction Luncheon at The Hilton Anatole.

“It’s about moving forward and helping the next generation,” said Tummala. “Ursuline and the Girl Scouts are so Serviam-based. Ursuline has made me more self-confident and showed me leadership doesn’t have to be on a big scale. You can always make a difference.”

Tummala has been a Juliette Girl Scout member since 2012. With the help of Girl Scouts mentor Gerri Gordon, she earned her Gold Award after developing math and science curriculum for fourth graders at St. Monica. She also received the President’s Volunteer Service Award for her commitment to community service.

Tummala said she was inspired listening to luncheon keynote speaker Reshma Saujani, the CEO of Girls Who Code, a nonprofit committed to teaching girls computer skills and bridging the gender gap in the IT industry.

“She said it’s hard when you can’t see people like you in your field, but she’s exactly like me,” Tummala said. “That’s so nice.”

Tummala hasn’t decided where she’s going to college, but she wants to major in economics or entrepreneurship and pursue medical school. The president and founder of Ursuline’s National Science Honor Society and Entrepreneurship Club has also been an avid horseback rider since fifth grade. Her favorite class is psychology.

“I think the combination (of economics or entrepreneurship and medical school) will work well together when I start my own clinic,” Tummala said.

Mannava Sri Kanth Prasad replaces Roger Binny as national selector

Mumbai, Nov 9: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has started clean-up on conflict of interest issues. Among several major decisions taken today at the Indian cricket board's 86th Annual General Meeting (AGM), former India all-rounder Roger Binny was removed as senior selector and replaced with former wicketkeeper-batsman Mannava Sri Kanth Prasad

"Now, to identify fresh talent, to identify players who can go on to become legends, who can go on to serve for the country for long, is not a small thing. With such a vast pool of talent available in the country, that is a big challenge which I will definitely enjoy. Because, from nowhere, Andhra Cricket Association is something today. I am damn sure, with all the talent pool that we have, I think it will be a fantastic thing," Prasad told PTI here.

Prasad, a former wicketkeeper-batsman, said the new job would be challenging though he has been involved in selection with the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) for many years now.

"Definitely, it will be a challenging job. I have been selecting in Andhra for different age groups. Almost all nine age groups, I am a part of selection committee," he said.

Prasad, who played 6 Tests and 17 ODIs for India, is from Andhra Pradesh. The 40-year-old Prasad is set to take over from Binny in one of the two changes in the 5-man selection panel headed by Sandeep Patil.

The 5 senior selectors are Vikram Rathore (North Zone), Sandeep Patil (Chairman, West Zone), Gagan Khoda (Central Zone), Prasad (South Zone) and Saba Karim (East Zone).

Indian American researcher Dr. Pavan Atluri-led team develops replacement tissues, organs

A team of bioengineers at Rice University and surgeons at the University of Pennsylvania, led in part by an Indian American scientist Pavan Atluri, have collaborated to create a new implant that could indicate medical technology may be on the cusp of developing replacement tissues and organs for transplantation.

The implant, which contains an intricate network of blood vessels, was created in a 3D printer using just sugar and silicone.

The researchers have recently released their findings in a study called “In vivo anastomosis and perfusion of a 3D printed construct containing micro-channel networks,” published in the journal Tissue Engineering Part C: Methods.

“They don’t yet look like the blood vessels found in organs, but they have some of the key features relevant for a transplant surgeon,” said Jordan Miller, professor of bioengineering at Rice and head of the bioengineering team. “We created a construct that has one inlet and one outlet, which are about 1 millimeter in diameter, and these main vessels branch into multiple smaller vessels, which are about 600 to 800 microns.

The team or surgeons from the University of Pennsylvania was led by Indian American Pavan Atluri, an assistant professor of surgery there.

Atluri’s group used Doppler imaging technology to team observe and measure blood flow through the construct and found that it withstood physiologic pressures and remained open and unobstructed for up to three hours.

“This study provides a first step toward developing a transplant model for tissue engineering where the surgeon can directly connect arteries to an engineered tissue,” Miller said. “In the future we aim to utilize a biodegradable material that also contains live cells next to these perfusable vessels for direct transplantation and monitoring long term.”

Vennam Jyothi Surekha is Asian champion

Vijayawada archer Vennam Jyothi Surekha has emerged Asian champion by winning the individual gold in the final defeating Iranian Afsaneh by a margin of four points (141-137). Surekha, an archer representing the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) and a student of Koneru Lakshmaiah University, was off to flying start by taking narrow lead (29-28, 28-27) and later increased to six by punching 30-26.

She maintained her focus in the subsequent games to keep the Iranian in leash to win the coveted medal.

However, in the compound team final, India with Jyothi Surekha, Swati and Jayalakshmi faced a setback as they lost to a much-focussed rival Korea in the finial by a meagre margin of two points (232-234). Surekha, among stood out as she punched total 80 points while her mates garnered 76 each. The 19-year-old archer finished the season in a triumphant manner by winning six international medals, two gold, three silver and one bronze. She won two individual golds in the Asia Cup (March) and Asian Championship (November), both held in Bangkok.

Rishika Sunkara wins ITF singles title

Raipur: Top seed Rishika Sunkara of Vijayawada (Playing for Delhi) subdued a fighting Natasha Palha 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 in the final of the $10,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament and lifted the Gondwana Cup here on last Saturday.

It was her third singles final on the trot for the 22-year-old Rishika. Incidentally, it was her second singles title in the international circuit, with the earlier one having been won in Delhi in May 2012.

After having lost to Fatma Al Nabhani of Oman and four-time National champion Prerna Bhambri in the last two finals in Hyderabad and Lucknow respectively, the wiry Rishika was resolute about enhancing her title collection.

Incidentally, she has eight doubles titles, including four this season, and had lost the doubles final with Prerna on Friday.

It was Rishika who called the shots early on, when she led 3-1 in the second set after having served out the first set at love. However, the athletic Natasha, who had started well but had lost her way, stepped up her game to reel off six games on the trot.

The 21-year-old Natasha swept away with the second set, dropping only four points in five games.

In the decider, Natasha missed her chances as, after having broken Rishika’s serve in the first game, she missed six gamepoints and dropped her serve on the third breakpoint.

From then on, Rishika dictated the course of the match to eventually pull through in two hours and 51 minutes.

Interestingly, it was the fourth victory for Rishika over Natasha in as many meetings in the international circuit, from 2007, when the two had met in the junior circuit for the first time.

The 582nd ranked Natasha was sharp in converting her chances as she won seven of nine breakpoints, but Rishika did it better by breaking Natasha’s serve nine times after forcing 22 breakpoints.

The champion collected 12 WTA points and the runner-up, seven WTA points.

The results (final): Rishika Sunkara bt Natasha Palha 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.

Apurva Kanneganti scores perfect on SAT and ACT creates record

GERMANTOWN, TN - Apurva Kanneganti, A Shelby County Schools student has accomplished two nearly-impossible feats, achieving perfect scores on both the ACT and SAT.

Germantown High School Senior Apurva Kanneganti scored a 36 on the ACT and a 2400 on the SAT. the scores which are rarely achieved. Born in Hyderabad, Apurva moved to US when she was just two-years. Her mother, Tirumala Devi Kanneganti is a professor at St. Jude’s Research Hospital in Memphis while her father, Kanneganti Sanjeev Rao is an IT professional.

Her mother hails from Kothagudem in Khammam, while father hails from Guntur.

"And in the future I want to be a physician, so helping out people is one of my major things,” Kanneganti said.

The college board which oversees testing said just 0.02 percent of students earn a perfect score on their SAT test, while ACT officials said about 0.06 percent make a perfect score on the ACT.

"Well, definitely they are not a piece of cake; I did study for them,” she said.

Kanneganti will be graduating from Germantown High School at the top of her class this year, and she’s only 16 years old.

Apurva is a member of the International Baccalaureate Program and president of five clubs at GHS. She credits her parents, both of whom work at St. Jude, with her success.

“They never told me you have to get a 36, you have to get all As. They just said ‘do your best.’”

She hopes to attend Harvard, but still considers herself a normal teenager.

Apurva also does a lot in the Indian community in Memphis, performing classical dance and organizing cultural activities.

"I just try to balance everything out so I'm not lame,” she said with a laugh. “I do have a lot of fun, but I just make sure that my academics are kind of where they should be as well.”

Colleges around the world are trying to recruit the teen. At last check, she has been offered more than $400,000 in scholarships.

AMD appoints Raja Koduri head of Radeon Graphics Group

AMD has announced that it is bundling its disparate graphics efforts into a single division, dubbed the Radeon Technologies Group, under freshly-promoted senior vice president and chief architect Raja Koduri.

Acquired by CPU specialist AMD back in 2006 for $5.4 billion, GPU maker ATI was rapidly absorbed by its new parent and found its technologies spread throughout the company. Rebranded simply as AMD, ATI's technologies can be found in embedded, consumer, enthusiast, and even server and high-performance computing products. This, however, has given the fiscally-challenged AMD a fresh issue: how to regain the focus the company once enjoyed as a separate entity.

AMD's solution: to bring the graphics division back under a single leader, Raja Koduri. The newly-formed Radeon Technologies Group will handle every aspect of graphics and GPGPU computing at the firm, with the 47 year old executive at the helm. It's far from Koduri's first rodeo: he has previously overseen the development of the High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) technology found in AMD's latest graphics products, and has been leading the company's LiquidVR initiative. Prior to rejoining AMD, Koduri worked as director of graphics architecture at Apple, and before that he was at ATI pre-acquisition and AMD post-acquisition.

'AMD is one of the few companies with the engineering talent and IP to make emerging immersive computing opportunities a reality,' crowed Koduri of the company that has just given him a hefty promotion. 'Now, with the Radeon Technologies Group, we have a dedicated team focused on growing our business as we create a unique environment for the best and brightest minds in graphics to be a part of the team re-defining the industry.'

'We are entering an age of immersive computing where we will be surrounded by billions of brilliant pixels that enhance our daily lives in ways we have yet to fully comprehend,' added Lisa Su, president and chief executive of AMD. 'AMD is well positioned to lead this transition with graphics IP that powers the best gaming and visual computing experiences today. With the creation of the Radeon Technologies Group we are putting in place a more agile, vertically-integrated graphics organization focused on solidifying our position as the graphics industry leader, recapturing profitable share across traditional graphics markets, and staking leadership positions in new markets such as virtual and augmented reality.'

The organising of the graphics division into a distinct entity is, however, likely to refresh rumours of a split that would see AMD spin off the Radeon Technologies Group - possibly even regaining its former name of ATI - in order to stem its growing losses. AMD has not, however, publicly commented on the likelihood of such a move.
