Jagadish Chennupati Among Indian American Innovators Named NAI Fellows


WASHINGTON — The National Academy of Inventors (NAI) elected Jagadish Chennupati of The Australian National University to its 2015 NAI Fellows on 15 December 2015 The award recognizes innovators that have made positive contributions to the world and U.S. economy and includes: 27 Nobel laureates, 27 inductees to the National Inventors Hall of Fame and 32 recipients of the U.S. National Medal of Technology and Innovation and U.S. National Medal of Science.

The NAI described the election as “a high professional distinction accorded to academic inventors who have demonstrated a prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development and the welfare of society.”

The newly elected fellows will join 156 other scientific luminaries to be recognized at a formal induction on 15 April 2016 at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in Alexandria, Virginia, USA.

The NAI Fellows will be inducted on 15 Apr. 2016, as part of the Fifth Annual Conference of the National Academy of Inventors at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). 

About Dr.Jagadish Chennupati:
Born in Vallurupalem - Krishna District (Andhra Pradesh) Dr.Jagadish received the B.Sc. degree from Nagarjuna University, Guntur, India in 1977, the M.Sc(Tech) degree from Andhra University, Waltair, India in 1980 and the M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Delhi, India in 1982 and 1986, respectively. He was a Lecturer in Physics and Electronics at S.V. College, University of Delhi, during 1985-88 and worked at Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada, during 1988-90 as a post-doctoral research fellow. He moved to Australia in 1990 and established a major research program in the field of optoelectronics and nanotechnology. He is currently a Distinguished Professor and Head of Semiconductor Optoelectronics and Nanotechnology Group in the Department of Electronic Materials Engineering, Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering, the Australian National University. He is also serving as Director of Australian National Facbrication Facility, ACT node and Convenor of the Australian Nanotechnology Network.  He holds honorary positions at  University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Chengdu; University of Tokyo, Anna University and Nanjing University.   He is serving as Vice-President and Secretary Physical Sciences of the Australian Academy of Science.  His research interests include compound semiconductor optoelectronics and nanotechnology.

Jagadish is a winner of 2000 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc (USA) (IEEE) Third Millennium Medal and a Distinguished Lecturer of IEEE Nanotechnology Council (NTC), IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society (LEOS) and IEEE Electron Devices Society (EDS). He has published more than 820 research papers (550 journal papers), holds 5 US patents, co-authored a book, co-edited 6 books, guest edited 15 special issues of journals and edited 12 conference proceedings. Jagadish has served as President of the IEEE Nanotechnology Council  (2008 and 2009), Vice-President (Publications) of NTC (2004-2005), President-Elect of NTC (2007), Past-President (2010-2011) and Vice-President (Membership and Regional Activities- Asia-Pacific) of the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society (2006 and 2007) and Vice-President (Finance and Administration) of IEEE Photonics Society (2012-14). He served as an elected member of EDS AdCom (1999-2004), and as Chair of Optoelectronic Devices Technical Committee of EDS (1998-2003) and Vice-President (Publications) of the IEEE Nanotechnology Council (2004-2005) and served as a member of the nanotechnology technical committee of EDS (2003-2005)and Chair of the NTC Nano-Optoelectronics, Nano-Optics and nano-photonics technical committee (2003-2006) and Chair of the NTC Awards Committee (2006-2008). This 23 year old Srikanth Bolla tricked fate to build a Rs 50-crore company

When he was born, neighbors in the village suggested that his parents smother him. It was better than the pain they would have to go through their lifetime, some said. He is a “useless” baby without eyes… being born blind is a sin, others added.

Twenty-three years later, Srikanth Bolla is standing tall living by his conviction that if the “world looks at me and says, ‘Srikanth, you can do nothing,’ I look back at the world and say I can do anything.”

Srikanth is the CEO of Hyderabad-based Bollant Industries, an organisation that employs uneducated and disabled employees to manufacture eco-friendly, disposable consumer packaging solutions, which is worth Rs 50 crores.

He considers himself the luckiest man alive, not because he is now a millionaire, but because his uneducated parents, who earned Rs 20,000 a year, did not heed any of the ‘advice’ they received and raised him with love and affection. “They are the richest people I know,” says Srikanth.

For Srikanth, despite life being more challenging than it is for most of us, he always aimed high.Born blind into an agricultural family in Sitaramapuram village in Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh, he was admitted to a blind school in Hyderabad. He excelled in studies and scored above 90 percent in his class 10 examinations. He wanted to be an engineer and applied for the physics, mathematics and chemistry group for pre-university. But the education department said that a visually challenged person could only take up humanities. He had to run from pillar to post to get a favourable judgement. With the support of T Swarnalatha, his teacher from class 4, who translated all the books for him in audio format and braille he managed to score 93 percent. But the hurdle came when he wanted to join IIT after his pre-university. No entrance coaching institute gave him admission.

What is it about stories like Srikanth’s that so inspire and fill one with hope? Could it be the multiple zeroes after a dollar sign or the belief that you and I can achieve similar success if we set our minds and hearts to it? Underdog success stories touch a raw nerve. After all, everyone faces adversity, they dream, and they work hard. It is another matter that only a few cross the threshold of limits set by society.

In Srikanth’s case, it is his sheer tenacity that shines through the dark clouds of his misfortune. Being born blind was just one part of the story. He was also born poor. And you know what that means in a society like ours.

In school, he was pushed to the back bench and not allowed to play. The little village school had no way of knowing what inclusion meant. When he wanted to take up science after his class X, he was denied the option because of his disability. All of 18, Srikanth not only fought the system but went on to become the first international blind student to be admitted to the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US.

Today, Srikanth has four production plants, one each in Hubli (Karnataka) and Nizamabad (Telangana), and two in Hyderabad (Telangana). Another plant, which will be one hundred percent solar operated, is coming up in Sri City, an integrated business city in Andhra Pradesh, 55 kms from Chennai.

Angel investor Ravi Mantha, who met Srikanth about two years ago, was so impressed with his business acumen and vision for his company that he not only decided to mentor him but also invested in Srikanth’s company.

They are raising $2-million (around Rs 13 crores) in funding and have already raised Rs 9 crores. According to Ravi, his personal goal is to “take the company to IPO.” A vision to build a sustainable company with a workforce comprising 70 percent people with disability is no mean task. “Srikanth’s vision is inbuilt in the company. It is not just a lip service to CSR,” adds Ravi.

When Srikanth was growing up, his father, a farmer, would take him to the fields but the little boy couldn’t be of any help. His father then decided that he might as well study. “In my parent’s entrepreneurship model, I was a failure. In entrepreneurship, we have a lean business model where we evaluate an enterprise and say how quickly it fails.” Since the nearest school in his village was five kms away, he had to make his way there mostly on foot. He did this for two years. “No one acknowledged my presence. I was put in the last bench. I could not participate in the PT class. That was the time in my life I thought I was the poorest child in the world. It was not because of lack of money but because of loneliness.”

He chose his battles carefully and did his homework searching the Internet to find the best engineering programme for someone like himself. He applied to schools in the US and got into the top four – MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, and Carnegie Mellon. He went to MIT (with a scholarship) as the first international blind student in the school’s history.

It wasn’t easy adjusting to life there, but by and by he started to do well. Towards the end of his bachelor’s course when the ‘what next’ question came up, it brought him back to where he had started.

Bolla wants to pursue an MBA in an institute like Harvard and become India's president. No doubt his story is one oft quoted by his hero, the former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.

“Show compassion and make people rich. Include people in your life and remove loneliness, and lastly, do something good; it will come back to you.”

స్వాతంత్ర సమర యోధురాలు శ్రీమతి మాగంటి అన్నపూర్ణాదేవి

మాగంటి అన్నపూర్ణాదేవి, స్వాతంత్ర పోరాటంలో పాల్గొన్న వనిత, సమాజ సేవిక, రచయిత్రి. తన 27వ యేటనే మరణించిన ఈమె అప్పటికే భారత స్వాతంత్ర పోరాటంలో ప్రముఖమైన పాత్ర నిర్వహించి మహాత్మా గాంధీ మన్ననలు పొందింది. ఈమె భర్త మాగంటి బాపినీడు దక్షిణాదిన ప్రముఖ స్వాతంత్ర సమర యోధులలో ఒకడు.
అన్నపూర్ణాదేవి 1900 సంవత్సరంలో ఒక మధ్యతరగతి కుటుంబంలో కలగర రామస్వామి, పిచ్చమ్మ దంపతులకు జన్మించింది. చిన్నతనంనుండి తన ప్రతిభను కనపరచింది. ఏలూరు కు చెందిన రాలి శేషగిరిరావు ఆమెకు గురువు, మార్గదర్శి. ఆదిపూడి సోమనాధరావు అనే కవి మరియు సంఘసంస్కర్త కూడా ఆమెపై ప్రభావం చూపాడు. మొదట్లో ఆమె ఇంటివద్దనే చదువుకొన్నది. తరువాత గుంటూరు మిషన్ స్కూలులో చదువుకొంది. తరువాత కలకత్తాలో బ్రహ్మ సమాజం బాలికల పాఠశాలలో చదివింది. ఆర్ధికంగా బలహీనులైన ఆమె తల్లిదండ్రులు ఎంతో శ్రమించి ఆమె విద్యాభ్యాసానికి అవుసరమైన ఖర్చులు భరించారు. కలకత్తాలో శ్రీమతి శకుంతలాదేవి, హేమచంద్ర సిర్కార్ వంటి విద్యావేత్తలు ఆమె చదువు, జీవితం రూపుదిద్దుకోవడంలో సహాయపడ్డారు. ఆమె క్రమశిక్షణా జీవనం అందరినీ ఆశ్చర్యపరిచేది. పాఠశాల విద్యలతోపాటు బెంగాలీ భాషలో మంచి ప్రావీణ్యం సంపాదించింది. బెంగాలీ నుండి తెలుగులోకి పెక్కు అనువాదాలు చేసింది.
ఐదేళ్ళ చదువు తరువాత ఆ వత్తిడి ఆమెపై ప్రభావం చూపింది. ఏలూరుకు తిరిగి వచ్చింది. ఒక సంవత్సరం తరువాత మద్రాసు విశ్వవిద్యాలయంమెట్రిక్యులేషన్ పరీక్షకు కూర్చొంది. తన చదువుకు అవుఉసరమైన ధనం సంపాదించుకోవడం కోసం 1917లో (తన 17వ యేట) "సీతారామ" అనే పుస్తకాన్ని ప్రచురించింది. అది తరువాత ఉన్నత పాఠశాల చదువులకు పాఠ్యపుస్తకంగా వాడారు. తరువాత ఆమె ఆరోగ్యం దెబ్బతిన్నది. ఒక సంవత్సరం పాటు వైద్యం నిమిత్తం 1919లో మదనపల్లె వెళ్ళింది. 1920లో ఆమె వివాహం మాగంటి బాపినీడుతో జరిగింది. అతను అప్పుడు కలకత్తా సిటీ కాలేజిలో చదువుతున్నాడు. వారి వివాహానికి తెలుగులోనే మంత్రాలు చదివారు. ఉమేష్ చంద్ర విద్యార్థి, ఆదిపూడి సోమనాథరావు వంటి సంస్కర్తలు ఆ వివాహానికి అతిధులుగా ఉన్నారు.
వివాహం తరువాత బాపినీడు ఉన్నత చదువులకు అమెరికా వెళ్ళాడు. అతనితోపాటు అన్నపూర్ణ కూడా వెళ్ళాల్సి ఉంది కాని పొసగలేదు. భారతదేశంలో ఉన్న అన్నపూర్ణాదేవి మహాత్మా గాంధీ సందేశంతో ప్రభావితయై భారత స్వాతంత్ర పోరాటం పనులలో తలమునకలు కాసాగింది. అదే సమయంలో ఆమె డబ్బుకోసం చాలా ఇబ్బందులు పడింది. అయినా గాని 1200 రూపాయల ఖరీదైన చీరలన్నీ (అమెరికా ప్రయాణం కోసం కొనుక్కున్నవి) తగులబెట్టేసింది. ఏలూరులో మోహన్‌దాస్ ఖద్దర్ పరిశ్రమ స్థాపించింది. ఆంధ్ర దేశం అంతటా పర్యటించింది.
1923లో బాపినీడు తిరిగివచ్చాడు. బొంబాయిలో అతను స్టీమర్ దిగిన వెంటనే ఆమె తను తెచ్చిన ఖద్దరు బట్టలు అతనికిచ్చి అతని సూటులన్నీ సముద్రంలో పారవేయమంది. అతను మారుమాటాడకుండా అలానే చేశాడు. గాంధీ ఆమె గురించి she had already ‘acquired a gentle but commanding influence over her husband, by her purity and single-minded devotion.’ అని వ్రాశాడు.ఆమె తరువాత అనేక ప్రాంతాలు పర్యటించింది. సభలలో ప్రసంగించింది. తన కార్యదీక్ష, సత్ప్రవర్తనల ద్వారా అందరి మన్ననలూ పొందింది.
1924లో ఆమె ఆరోగ్యం మళ్ళీ క్షీణించసాగింది. భర్తతో కలిసి అనేక ఆరోగ్య కేంద్రాలకు వెళ్ళింది. ఈ సమయంలోనే రామకృష్ణ పరమహంస బోధనలను తెలుగులోకి అనువదించింది. భారతదేశం భవిష్యత్తులో మహిళల పరిస్థితి గురించి "నారి" అనే పుస్తకం వ్రాసింది. 1927 నవంబరు 9న ఆమె మరణించింది.
ఆమె మరణం తరువాత ఆమె వ్యక్తిత్వం గురించి మహాత్మా గాంధీ ఇలా వ్రాశాడు.
"1921 బెజవాడ మహిళా సమావేశంలో ఖద్దరు వస్త్రాలు ధరించిన ఒక అమ్మాయి అన్నీ తానై అందరినీ అదుపుచేస్తూ సమావేశం నిర్వహించింది. ఆమె అంతకు ముందు ధరించిన విలువైన ఆభరణాలు నాకు గుర్తున్నాయి. ఆమె మరణం వల్ల నేను కోల్పోయింది కేవలం ఒక సహాయకురాలు మాత్రమే కాదు. భారత దేశంలో నా స్వంత కూతురులా మెలగిన ఒక వనిత మనకు దూరమైంది. ఆమె విశ్వాసంలోను, పనిలోను ఎన్నడూ చలించలేదు. ఆమె కార్యదీక్ష అందరికీ ఆదర్శప్రాయమైనది."
ఈమె మరణానంతరం బాపినీడు 193౩లో అన్నపూర్ణాదేవి లేఖలు ఒక పుస్తకంగా ప్రచురించాడు. ఈ పుస్తకానికి పరిచయవాక్యాలు ఉన్నవ లక్ష్మీనారాయణ వ్రాశాడు

Jayadev Galla receives Business Today Best CEO 2015

NEW DELHI: Jayadev Galla, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Amara Raja Batteries has been awarded the Business Today Best CEO for the auto ancillary category, the company informed in a press statement. He received the award from Jayant Sinha, Union Minister of State for Finance.

Accepting the Award Galla said "I am incredibly humbled by this honour, to be unanimously selected by this esteemed panel of judges means a lot to me, but more importantly to our organisation. The success of Amara Raja Batteries limited can only be attributed to the support, hard work, and dedication of our employees team Partners. It's on their behalf that I am accepting this award."

Amara Raja Batteries is one of the largest manufacturers of lead acid batteries for both industrial and automotive applications in the Indian storage battery industry.

Justice Dama Seshadri Naidu appointed as Addl.Judge Kerala High Court

The Ministry of Law and Justice has issued a notification transferring Justice Dama Seshadri Naidu, an  additional judge of the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh High Court, to the Kerala High Court.

The notification, issued last Monday, directed the judge to assume charge on or before June 30. Naidu’s appointment has been confirmed by the Office of the Registrar General of the Kerala High Court. According to sources, the swearing in ceremony of the new judge will be held on June 30.

With the transfer of Justice Naidu, the number of judges in the Kerala High Court has reached 34.

He joined the Andhra Pradesh High Court in September 2013 as an additional judge. Later, he was appointed as judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court.    Born in Ganganagunta, near Tirupati on June 19, 1962,  Justice Naidu graduated in arts from the Andhra University, and studied LLB at the SV University, Tirupati. In March 1997, he enrolled as a member of the Bar Council of Andhra Pradesh.

Initially, he practiced only in Tirupati, in order to gain trial court experience. After shifting to Hyderabad in the early 2000s, he started practice in the Andhra Pradesh High Court. He has represented many corporate entities and nationalised banks, apart from private clientele.

He was a guest faculty at the Andhra Pradesh Judicial Academy. He taught the Hindu Succession Act-1956 and the Negotiable Instrument Act-1881. He has authored the ‘Law of Stamp Duty and Registration in Andhra Pradesh’ and the ‘Andhra Pradesh Education Code’.

Volga bags Sahitya Academy Award

Renowned Telugu writer, Volga (Popuri Lalitha Kumari) has been selected for the prestigious Sahitya Academy Award for her short story compilation ‘Vimukta Kadha Samputi’, for the year 2015. The award winning short stories focus on the freedom of women through female characters.

Popuri Lalitha Kumari,(W/o Akkineni Kutumba Rao, writer and director) popularly known by her pen name Volga, is noted for her literary work that features a feminist perspective. Her stories, novels, and poetry reflect well-articulated feminist positions without compromising either the quality of literary form or failing to represent the ‘reality’ of the characters.

Volga is one of the popular Telugu women authors of her generation. Born in Guntur of Andhra Pradesh in 1950, she completed her MA in Telugu literature from Andhra University in 1972. Later she taught Telugu literature at VSR and NVR College, Tenali from 1973 to 1986.

Apart from authoring books, Volga has contributed to the film industry also. She worked as the head of the scripting division in Usha Kiran Movies.

She made three feature films, which won critical acclaim and awards. Among her works are the novels Sweccha (1994), Sahaja (1995), Manavi (1998), Kanniti keratala vennela (1999), Gulabilu (2000), and Rajakiya kathalu (1993), Prayogam (1995) (two short story collections). Volga is associated with ASMITA, a well-known feminist voluntary organization. The Library of Congress has acquired all twelve of her major published works, including the English translation of her selected short stories.

ఓల్గాకు (పోపూరి లలిత కుమారి) కేంద్ర సాహిత్య అకాడమీ అవార్డు

న్యూఢిల్లీ: ప్రముఖ తెలుగు రచయిత్రి ఓల్గాకు తాను చేసిన సాహిత్య సేవకు సముచిత గౌరవం దక్కింది. ఆమె 2015 సంవత్సరానికిగాను కేంద్ర ప్రభుత్వం ఇచ్చే సాహిత్య అకాడమీ అవార్డుకు ఎంపికయ్యారు. ఓల్గా రాసిన ‘విముక్త’ కథా సంపుటికిగాను ఈ అవార్డుకు ఎంపికచేసినట్టు జ్యూరి వెల్లడించింది. ఓల్గా అసలు పేరు పోపూరి లలిత కుమారి (w/o అక్కినేని కుటుంబ రావు). కలం పేరు  ఓల్గా. 

ఓల్గా 1950 నవంబర్ 27వ తేదీన ఆంధ్రప్రదేశ్ రాష్ట్రంలోని గుంటూరులో జన్మించారు. ఆమె ఆంధ్ర విశ్వవిద్యాలయంలో ఎంఎ చేసి తర్వాత తెనాలిలోని విఎస్ఆర్ కళాశాలలో తెలుగు అధ్యపకురాలిగా పనిచేశారు. ఆమె 1991 నుంచి 1997 వరకు ఆస్మిత రిసోర్స్ సెంటర్ ఫర్ విమెన్ అధ్యక్షురాలిగా పనిచేశారు. ఆమె ప్రస్తుతం అస్మితలో ప్రధాన కార్యదర్శిగా ఉన్నారు. ఆమె 1990లో తెలుగు విశ్వవిద్యాలయం నుంచి ఉత్తమ రచయిత్రి పురస్కారాన్ని అందుకున్నారు. 2014లో లోక్ నాయకు ఫౌండేషన్ సాహితీ పురస్కారానికి ఎంపికయ్యారు.

‘స్వేచ్చ’ రచన ద్వారా ఆమె ప్రాచుర్యంలోకి వచ్చారు. ఫెమినిస్ట్ రచనా దృక్పథాన్ని తెలుగులో ప్రవేశపెట్టిన ఘనత దక్కించుకున్నారు. ఈమె వరల్డ్ ఆర్గనైజేషన్ ఫర్ రైట్స్, లిటరేచర్ అండ్ డెవలప్‌మెంట్(డబ్ల్యూవోఆర్‌ఎల్‌డీ) స్థాపనలో ప్రముఖ పాత్ర పోషించారు. ఈ సంస్థ పబ్లిషర్స్, అనువాదకులు, రచయితలు స్వేచ్చగా మాట్లాడేందుకు వేదికగా పనిచేస్తోంది.

రాజకీయ కథలు, స్వేచ్ఛ, సహజ, ప్రయోగం, మానవి, కన్నీటి కెరటాల వెన్నెల, గులాబీలు, ఆకాశంలో సంగం, పలికించకు మౌనమృదంగాలు, అలజడి మా జీవితం వంటి పలు రచనలు చేశారు. మాకు గోడలు లేవు, నూరేళ్ల చలం వంటి రచనలకు ఆమె సంపాదకత్వం వహించారు.

Pranjala Yadlapalli wins Orange Bowl International Tennis Tournament

Florida: The Orange Bowl International tennis tournament ended Sunday the way it began, with rain wreaking havoc on the schedule.

Pranjala Yadlapalli (India) and Tamara Zidansek (Slovakia) won the Girls 18s doubles 6-2, 6-2 over Eleni Christofi (Greece)/Anastasia Detiuc (Moldova).
